The Challenge

Non-human primates are essential models for studying infectious diseases and evaluating vaccines and therapeutics before clinical trials.

However, Canada does not have a national breeding colony and has limited capacity to conduct large-animal studies in Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) containment. This reliance on foreign resources can slow Canada’s response during a public health emergency.

![solution](https://pppec.ca/hs-fs/hubfs/solution.png?width=130&height=125&name=solution.png)

The solution

The NPCPP will establish an integrated Canadian infrastructure for preclinical research on infectious diseases.

The centre will bring together a breeding colony, a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) facility for large animals, advanced bioimaging capabilities, and specialized biological and analytical resources.

This infrastructure will enable faster evaluation of vaccines and therapeutics and help advance promising candidates toward clinical trials. It will also support the development of pediatric research.

![Fonctionnement](https://pppec.ca/hs-fs/hubfs/Fonctionnement.png?width=130&height=127&name=Fonctionnement.png)

 How it works

1\. Provide the Models: Develop a Canadian non-human primate colony to ensure reliable access to models suitable for infectious disease research.

2\. Evaluate: Conduct preclinical studies in Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) containment to assess the efficacy and safety of vaccines and therapeutics.

3\. Analyze: Use bioimaging, immune monitoring, multi-omics analyses, and biobanking to accelerate translation to clinical trials.

---

 Expected Impact

NPCPP will allow :

- Ensure reliable access to essential preclinical models in Canada;
- Accelerate the development of vaccines and therapeutics;
- Reduce reliance on international resources;
- Support Canadian researchers and biopharmaceutical companies;
- Strengthen Canada’s capacity to respond to emerging pathogens.

Leveraging Impact

The project builds on more than 15 years of expertise developed at Université Laval in infectious disease research using non-human primates.

This national infrastructure will foster new research projects, industry collaborations, international partnerships, and additional funding opportunities.

Infrastructures Being Established

The NPCPP will include :

- A Canadian non-human primate breeding colony;
- A Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) facility for large animals;
- Preclinical and longitudinal research capabilities;
- A PET/CT imaging system;
- A biological resource centre, including biobanks;
- Immune monitoring tools and multi-omics data capabilities;
- Capabilities that meet the requirements for regulatory preclinical studies.
