**The Challenge**

During a pandemic, every day counts. Yet the path from identifying a new pathogen to producing vaccines or therapeutics remains long, complex, and difficult to scale.

To be ready for the next public health emergency, Canada must be able to rapidly develop and manufacture biologics in a reliable, adaptable, and scalable manner.

![solution](https://pppec.ca/hs-fs/hubfs/solution.png?width=130&height=125&name=solution.png)

The Solution

RampUp is developing an integrated biomanufacturing platform designed to accelerate the entire pathway, from biotherapeutic design to production at clinical trial scale.

The project is establishing versatile protein expression platforms using bacterial and mammalian cells to design manufacturable biologics, develop their manufacturing processes, scale up production, and support final formulation and sterile fill-finish.

By working closely with industry and technology transfer partners, RampUp also aims to accelerate the transition from discovery to commercialization.

![Fonctionnement](https://pppec.ca/hs-fs/hubfs/Fonctionnement.png?width=130&height=127&name=Fonctionnement.png)

 How it Works

1\. Design: Develop cell-based platforms and biologics optimized for rapid and efficient manufacturing.

2\. Develop: Create and optimize scalable biomanufacturing processes and the analytical methods required for quality control.

3\. Produce: Rapidly manufacture biotherapeutics at clinical scale, including formulation and sterile fill-finish, with the goal of being ready in less than 100 days.

---

 Expected Impact

RampUp will allow :

- Accelerate the development of vaccines and biotherapeutics during future public health emergencies;
- Increase Canada’s biologics manufacturing capacity;
- Reduce the time between pathogen discovery and clinical trials;
- Facilitate the transfer of innovations to industry and contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs);
- Strengthen Canada’s self-sufficiency in biomanufacturing.

Leveraging Impact

RampUp brings together academic, government, and industry partners within an integrated development pathway, facilitating the rapid transfer of innovations to market.

The project also contributes to the development of a highly skilled workforce through the STAIR (Supplying TAlent for Industry Readiness) program, which prepares the next generation of scientists and engineers for the realities of industrial biomanufacturing, regulatory requirements, and commercialization.

Infrastructures Being Established

A national biologics development and manufacturing platform that includes:

- Bacterial and mammalian production platforms;
- Biomanufacturing process development capabilities;
- Analytical technologies for quality control;
- Clinical-scale manufacturing capabilities, including formulation and sterile fill-finish;
- A technology transfer infrastructure connecting research, platforms, and industry partners.

**Project Status**

Deployment of the RampUp platform and its integrated biomanufacturing capabilities.

![jalons](https://pppec.ca/hs-fs/hubfs/jalons.png?width=128&height=106&name=jalons.png) Milestones acheived

- Establishment of a pan-Canadian consortium spanning the entire biomanufacturing value chain;
- Development of bacterial and mammalian expression platforms;
- Establishment of process development capabilities and analytical technologies;
- Deployment of the national STAIR / UpSTAIR / STAIRCase training programs, with more than 100 students trained.

![Next](https://pppec.ca/hs-fs/hubfs/Next.png?width=150&height=135&name=Next.png) Next Steps

- Optimize manufacturing platforms for different types of biologics.
- Demonstrate rapid production capabilities at clinical scale in less than 100 days.
- Accelerate technology transfer to industry partners to sustainably strengthen Canada’s biomanufacturing capacity.
